Tethered Oral Tissue Support

These conditions can significantly impact a child's overall health
and well-being if left untreated.

In pediatric dentistry, tethered oral tissue support involves identifying and addressing this condition in young children. Early detection and treatment of tethered oral tissue is crucial for proper development of the child's mouth and facial structures. If left untreated, it can lead to problems such as difficulty breastfeeding or bottle-feeding in infants, speech difficulties as they grow older, and even dental issues like malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) or gum disease.

Tethered Oral Tissue (TOT)

Tethered oral tissues, also known as tongue-tie or lip-tie, are conditions where the muscles that attach the tongue and lips to the floor of the mouth are too tight. This can lead to difficulty with proper speech development, breastfeeding difficulties in infants, and even dental problems such as poor alignment of teeth and improper chewing habits.

Why TOT?

Tongue and lip ties can restrict the movement of the tongue and lips, making it difficult for infants to latch onto their mother's nipple or a bottle correctly. This can lead to inadequate nutrition intake and may result in failure to thrive. Moreover, tethered oral tissues can also cause speech difficulties as they limit the mobility of the tongue necessary for proper pronunciation. Children with untreated tethered oral tissues may struggle with certain sounds or have difficulty speaking clearly. This could potentially affect their academic performance and social interactions. In addition, untreated tethered oral tissue can also impact dental development. The restricted movement of the tongue and lips can alter how teeth erupt into position, causing misalignment or crowding issues that may require orthodontic treatment later on. Early identification and intervention of tethered oral tissue support by Dr. Gia is crucial
